i just had the sudden urge to run a bath, put all my favourite books into the water and then climb in. would all the ink run? would i come out a purply-blue colour? would i stay that way for long? would i have absorbed all those words though? all those dialogues and all those poetics, have they osmosed their way into me? can i recite joyce carol oates short stories by heart now? are my words lush like a francesca lia block book? do my thoughts sting like an atwood poem? are my conversations reminiscent of elmore leonard dialogue? can i write the body like irving layton now?

or could i? but it would be such a waste, i mean, if it didn’t work. i’d only be left with a bunch of soggy books. and i’d probably be really sad about that.

What “I wish I was born in X time period” means is “I wish I was 25 at X”

I went to a friends house last night for some food, wine and bar hopping.  There was this woman, 30, seemed smart and with it and she was actually on her way to competing her masters in some bio molecular something or other. She was also a free spirit type (yes somehow they exist) and she stated that she “wishes she was born in the 60’s” so I asked “early or late?”

HER “Mid 60’s since that was when political and social change started happening.”

ME “So you think if you were born 15yrs earlier you could have had a significant impact on our current world?”

HER Yeah, it would have been so interesting, Dr Martin Luther King, Malcom X, Women’s Rights, the beginning of war protests.  I just wish I could have seen it first hand.

ME Like on tv?

HER No, like being there and experiencing all the passion that everyone seemed to have

ME Ok, how was it to be alive during the Fall of  Communism and the Berlin Wall? 

HER I don’t know I was like 8.

ME So do you think you would have appreciated the protests as a toddler better?

HER ….
